Will I be more sensitive to the sun while I am on oral acne antibiotics?

It is good to know that most oral antibiotics increase sun sensitivity though some are more than others. Doxycycline is one of them and is known to be associated with increased photosensitivity. During the summer months, we may want to switch to another antibiotic, if not a sunscreen of higher SPF should be used along and reapply at least every 2 hours with wearing a hat when possible.

The good news is that newer oral acne formulations have a lower incidence of causing sun sensitivity, although the risk is not completely eliminated and sunscreen is recommended to be used along. For example, the minocycline family is good for those who cannot avoid sun exposure, however, sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher should be used along and reapplied at least every 2 hours or more often after bathing or excessive sweating.
